Child’s Poncho!

January 2, 2012

I was told this year that my niece had enough cardies to wear and I was not to knit her any more for a while!! grrrrr…. So I decided to make her a poncho!!! Well its not a Cardie!!!

Here’s the pattern…. (probably for a child aged 3-5 ish)

2 100g skeins of Araucania Azapa (I used colour 810)

5.5mm needles

Main poncho (make 2 pieces)

Cast on 45 st

Knit 6 rows

Row 1: Knit

Row 2: K3 purl to last 3 sts K3

Repeat rows one and two until about 106 rows are completed

Knit 6 rows

Cast off

Sew the pieces up as per:

The hash areas indicate the sewn up bits!!

I then embellished the front collar area with some little crocheted flowers!!

I used a couple of bits of stashed yarns and crocheted the apple blossoms from Lesley Stanfield’s 100 Flowers to Knit and Crochet

I love your poncho but my granddaughter is 5 and very skinny but 4 ft. tall. How could I adapt this to fit her? I am no expert knitter so really don’t know how to adapt for a larger size. I am pam 53 on ravelry and my e-mail is gardnerpam6@gmail.com, if you can help me. Thanks!

Would love to know the details for your 5 year old. Were more stitches cast on?

The best way of describing it is fit the two pieces together in an L shape for the front then do the same at the back making sure it forms two v’s one front one back….

Thank you . but I did figure out the sewing part of the poncho. It does seem to be small for a 5 year old.. very pretty with flowers on front. Thank you, Mary sullivan

I’m working with my niece hence the Ish for the age range…. she appears a wee bit small for her age….. though she still chucks on her poncho I made for her when she was three and a half can still fit head through and she seems happy with the length… I have seem some ponchos made up on ravelry where people have crocheted an edging for increased length…

I have made my two poncho pieces and they are beautiful. I am not sure what stitch to use to sew them together. None of the tutorials I found on line address the different edges these pieces have. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Connie apologies for the late reply I have been in West Wales sans Interweb! just catching up with everything now! the first seam you need to sew so the pieces look like an L shape and then the same the other side. Hope this helps! Ellie x

Do you know how many stitches I would cast on and how many rows I would knit for a 12 month old. Would like to make this for my granddaughter ?

Hi Debbie! Ummmmm offhand not entirely sure it was a while ago I knitted it, I would maybe try a DK yarn on a 4mm needle!
